Panel Discussion during IUCN Congress 2025
On October 11, together with my colleagues, I co-organized a panel discussion on YOUTH BREAKING WALLS: ADVANCING TRANSBOUNDARY CONSERVATION IN CONFLICT-AFFECTED REGIONS, a thematic session at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi. The session was opened by welcome remarks from the Republic of Armenia’s Minister of Environment, Mr. Hambartsum Matevosyan.
There are numerous initiatives around the world promoting transboundary conservation in conflict-affected regions, including peace parks, joint monitoring programs and other collaborative efforts. However, many of these initiatives face challenges related to inclusivity. During our session, we discussed opportunities for youth engagement and active participation as a meaningful entry point to strengthen cooperation, build trust and foster new generation of conservation leaders across borders. The session was very successful in identifying needs of youth, understanding challenges they face in different parts of the world and exploring how we can make nature conservation a powerful tool for peace. We are looking forward to expanding this important discussion and advancing transboundary conservation in conflict-affected regions, while strengthening youth leadership.
Finally, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation Armenia for their generous support in making our participation possible.
